Integrative multi-scale modelling for biobased and bio-regional construction

The project aims to address the challenges of scaling bio-based construction materials while ensur-ing ecological sustainability and socio-economic benefits. Recent research highlights the potential of bio-based materials like timber and natural fibres to significantly reduce carbon emissions in construction. However, scaling these materials raises critical questions about resource avail-ability, market dynamics, and environmental impacts. This project plans to develop an integrated framework combining macro-economic, ecological, and spatial modelling to evaluate the impacts of bio-based construction materials at global and regional scales. It links macro-economic models with life cycle assessment (LCA) and geospatial assessments to evaluate material flows, biodi-versity impacts, and regional sourcing strategies based on market-ready scalable bio-based so-lutions. By integrating technical, ecological, and socio-economic perspectives, the research aims to inform sustainable pathways for transforming the building sector via regionally optimized ma-terial choices while addressing global challenges such as climate change, biodiversity loss, and resource competition.
